Speed Dating Despite Jammers

چکیده
We study the fundamental problem of how devices, operating over a wireless medium, can discover potential communication partners. For the devices, the spectrum is divided into m frequency channels. As multiple devices share these channels, they have to cope with collisions while they are trying to find other devices in the system. Moreover, we assume an adversarial jammer to block some of the available channels. The devices cannot distinguish between unvoluntary collisions, jamming, and empty channels, i.e. channels on which no device is currently transmitting its information. We construct algorithms efficiently solving the described discovery problem even if the number of jammed channels is unknown to the devices. Moreover, we discuss several jammer models and compare our algorithms to the inquiry algorithm of Bluetooth in simulations of different scenarios.

Can Anyone Be “The” One? Evidence on Mate Selection from Speed Dating
Marriage data show a strong degree of positive assortative mating along a variety of attributes. But since marriage is an equilibrium outcome, it is unclear whether positive sorting is the result of preferences rather than opportunities. We assess the relative importance of preferences and opportunities in dating behaviour, using unique data from a large commercial speed dating agency. While th...

This study examined the characteristics of individuals who are more likely to engage in speed dating and online dating, and the types of people who are more likely to prefer these forms of dating. Older individuals and those who scored high on shyness were more likely to have tried online dating. Older individuals, those who scored high on shyness, and those who had tried online dating were mor...
متن کاملOn Performance Analysis of Protective Jamming Schemes in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play an important role in Cyber Physical Social Sensing (CPSS) systems. An eavesdropping attack is one of the most serious threats to WSNs since it is a prerequisite for other malicious attacks. In this paper, we propose a novel anti-eavesdropping mechanism by introducing friendly jammers to wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In particular, we establish a theoretic...
متن کاملPredicting Relational Outcomes: An Investigation of Thin Judgements in Speed Dating
Many relational scholars suggest relational closeness may be determined during initial interaction (Berg & Clark, 1986; Duck, 1995). Speed dating (Deyo & Deyo, 2002) creates opportunities for rapid evaluations and thin slicing (Ambady, Bernieri, & Richeson, 2000) supports the notion that mere moments can predict relational outcomes and provides opportunities to understand relational components ...
متن کاملFrom Dating to Mating and Relating: Predictors of Initial and Long-Term Outcomes of Speed-Dating in a Community Sample
We studied initial and long-term outcomes of speed-dating over a period of 1 year in a community sample involving 382 participants aged 18–54 years. They were followed from their initial choices of dating partners up to later mating (sexual intercourse) and relating (romantic relationship). Using Social Relations Model analyses, we examined evolutionarily informed hypotheses on both individual ...
